People Inc Is Right: Publishers Should Not Enrich AI for Free

What we are reading: People Inc Don’t Trust AI – They Trust Creators, Says People Inc.’s Jonathan Roberts – AdExchanger, Joanna Gerber

Publishers want to be discoverable in AI, but they cannot afford to become unpaid infrastructure for someone else’s product.

AI search, chatbots, and agents are quickly becoming new discovery environments. Publisher content is central to making those answers useful. Trusted editorial work, product recommendations, reviews, reporting, service journalism, and creator-led expertise all make AI systems better.

In this current model, the value exchange is broken.

Publishers provide the authority. AI platforms absorb the value. The user may never click. The publisher may never know it was cited, summarized, paraphrased, or used to shape a decision. And in many cases, there is no revenue path attached to that usage.

The problem is not just scraping. The problem is value capture.

Publishers are not wrong to want their content surfaced by AI. In fact, for many publishers, disappearing from AI discovery may eventually become as dangerous as disappearing from search or social.  The problem is that visibility alone is not enough.

If a publisher appears in an AI answer but receives no attribution, no traffic, no commerce event, no subscription opportunity, and no advertiser value, then AI visibility is not a business model.

One of the most interesting points in the People Inc interview is the shift from institutional trust to human trust.

Readers may know the publication, but they increasingly trust the real person who tested the product, visited the hotel, cooked the recipe, interviewed the source, or understands the category. These are all things AI can’t do. We call this the Frozen Bagel Dilemma.

Affiliate: turning AI discovery into commerce value.

Affiliate content is one of the clearest places where publishers should benefit from AI discovery.

Consumers are already using AI to ask buying questions: What should I buy? Which product is best for me? What is worth the money? Which option is safest, fastest, most durable, most stylish, or most trusted?

Publisher content often contains the answer. But if AI systems summarize that recommendation without preserving the publisher’s commerce path, the publisher loses the value of its own influence.

Intelligent Attribution establishes the publisher as the recommended merchant of record, thus pushing the traditional affiliate revenue through the publisher who recommends the product.  Learn More about our Affiliate Solutions.

Paid media: making advertiser content valuable inside AI discovery.

Paid media faces a similar shift.

Publishers have spent years building branded content, sponsored editorial, partner pages, product explainers, and advertiser campaigns designed to inform and influence audiences. As AI becomes a discovery layer, that content should not disappear from the consideration path.

Intelligent Attribution helps solve paid media by helping publishers understand how advertiser content appears across AI surfaces, where it is missing, how competitors are being represented, and how paid media assets can be structured for better AI visibility.

This creates two major opportunities.

First, publishers can recognize AI visibility after the campaign. If a brand’s paid media content is being surfaced, cited, or used in AI-led answers, that value can become part of campaign reporting.

Second, publishers can eventually sell AI visibility up front. AI discoverability can become part of the paid media package itself — not as a vague promise, but as a measurable layer of distribution, authority, and share of voice.

This is how paid media evolves for the agentic web. Learn More about our Paid Media Solutions.
